Clinical Effect of the Integrated Therapy of Cynanchi Radix Added Goakhangjeonggisan and Fenofibrate on the Serum Lipids in the Hyperlipidemic Patients with Acute Stroke

Lew Jae-Hwan
Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare with each lipid-lowering effect of Cynanchi Radix added Goaknangjeonggisan (HSYO group), fenofibrate (FENO group), combination of these two medicines (COMB group) on lipids in hyperlipidemic patients with
acute
stroke for 2 months. The HSYO group administered 100 cc decoction of the mixture of Cynanchi Radix added Goakhangjeonggisan 3 times daily; FENO group received fenofibrate 250mg one time; COMB group was given both 100 cc decoction of it 3 times
daily and
fenofibrate 250mg one time. The follow-up check of lipids profiles (total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL-Cholesterol) was performed at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks following starting each therapy and the ratio of relative decrease (%) in lipids
of
each
patient was presented by the initial basal value - the degermined value at 2, 4, 8 week/the initial basal value. The change of numbers in each group during observation was presented according to the basal number and the number on the day of lipid
follow-up check; HSYO group n=8, 8, 8, 7; FENO group n=9, 9, 9, 9; COMB group n=19, 19, 19, 16.
@ES The results were as follow;
@EN 1) On total cholesterol, all groups showed a gradual decrease of total cholesterol by 4 weeks. 2 weeks later, significant differences compared with HSYO group (235.8¡¾18.9 mg/dL, mean 7.5% decrease of its basal value) were shown in both FENO
group
(223.8¡¾33.8 mg/dL, decrease of mean 13.3%) and COMB group (198.4¡¾36.7mg/dL, decrease of mean 18.8% p<0.05, respectively); 4 weeks later, HSYO group was 214.0¡¾30.2mg/dL (decrease of mean 16.4%), FENO group was 209.6¡¾41.1mg/dL (decrease of mean
14.8%), only significant differences was noted in COMB group (182.1¡¾23.7mg/dL, decrease of mean 25.4%, p<0.05) compared with HSYO group. On 8 weeks, all groups were within normal limits and showed no significant differences between groups.
2) On triglyceride, there also were marked drops of triglyceride compared with basal value of each in all groups over time and HSYO and COMB Groups showed sustainedly decreasing effects by 8 weeks However, significant intergroup differences were
not
noted in relation with the follow-up day.
3) On HDL-Cholesterol, there were no significant and slight decreases of HDL-Cholesterol compared with its basal value in HSYO (decrease of mean 11.3%), FENO group (decrease of mean 7.4%), and COMB group (decrease of mean 7.3%) by 8 weeks and
significant intergroup differences were not also noted in relation with the follow-up checking day.
The above result suggest that though not elevated HDL-cholesterol, the combination therapy of Cynanchi Radix added Goakhangjeonggisan and fenofibrate has more rapidly and sustainedly lipid-lowering effects than the single administration of
Cynanchi
Radix with Goakhangjeonggisan or fenofibrate in hyperlipidemic patients with acute stroke.
